Tea Time

GENRE: pop rock To be honest, the original song itself has been buried in the deep reaches of my memory, and hearing Japanese Breakfast  cover it so with such high fidelity unlocked it. I knew I recognized it at first, and I wonder why I never held so dear earlier. The verse (if you can even call it that) is so heartfelt and endearing. I'm particularly grateful that someone is covering it so closely to the original as well, because sometimes I just want to hear a good song brought to the modern quality it deserves. Regarding the artist, Japanese Breakfast  aligns pretty closely to the kind of music I've been listening to on repeat. You've got the female lead with a slower-paced indie backing band. I guess you can't really criticize the composition itself because it's just the cover, but the band covering it is so incredibly close to the original that criticizing it would essentially be the same thing. GENRE: indie rock hot cheetos Piquing my curiosity, I wanted to take a closer look at KKB's new album, and my my my was it worth it. This is a case study on why you shouldn't always judge a single song by itself when it is a smaller part of the whole. Only Acting  is weird, yes, but in the context of the whole album it makes much more sense. Of all the songs, one of the ones I enjoyed the most was Flyaway , with a much heavier rock band presence throughout. Guitars and drums lace the instrumentation with a distorted, realistic, natural and grounded sound. KKB additionally does what they do best, and that's creating catchy pop melodies that bring out their specific, unique style. The song doesn't overstay its welcome either. Concluding in about 2 minutes, it gets the point across. Going by the density of satisfaction per unit of time, this really tops the charts. Rating: 8.5/10

genre: pop rock, experimental I haven't listened to the entirety of their new album yet. I mainly held off on it too because I got fatigued from their niche aesthetic. From the looks of it, this album dives into some weird territory, based off this first song. From a glimpse of the other songs, each one has their own weird identity, so much so that I would even add experimental  to the genres. For this song though, it starts off normally. You've got the catchy, infectious melodies that KKB is known for. Then, guitars and drums come in! I was genuinely surprised. KKB does not  do this, and it was a cool to see the group trying out new things. Although, as the song goes on, things seem to teeter off the edge, evidenced by distorted singing, jarring hits, and sometimes just emptiness. In video form, this may contribute to the overall theme and performance. In a song form though, I don't really see the point. This may be a stretch, but this reminds me of the shift in tone ...
