Day 209: Say It by Sama Dams // 7

Huh, I kind of like the aesthetic of this band. On the outside, there's a brooding appearance, but their music has a lot of emotion behind it. The booming organ is so fitting, especially with those rock orchestra quality drums. The verses stroll along in a minor key, before the actual chorus picks up with an uplifting beat & progression. The vocals are made to sound like choir it seems, although with a bit of distortion. They're very clearly drawing inspiration from that spectrum, but adding a bit of their own dark flavors to it. I like to think of it as eating dark chocolate. That synth solo is pretty sick too; there are two voices speaking to each other and it's quite intense and dramatic. Honestly, my favorite part is the tone of that bass synth. Just, so crisp.

GENRE: indie rock Another one of those names that have always flown around in passing. Either that, or because this band is just in the vicinity of the songs that I enjoy listening to. From a glance, I can verify that the recommendations were accurate. Female vocalist, soft-ish instrumentation, but a killer fun drum part. You don't often see that aggression in these types of songs. Overall a very timid, subdued song. I know from experience that Frankie Cosmos  writes and performs a variety of intensities; this just so happens to be on the tamer end. Really, just a short and sweet piece. Although nothing special, it's not boring, and could be a fun listen hitherto. Rating: 6/10

Day 268: The Bug Collector by Haley Heynderickx // 6.5

GENRE: indie I'm revisiting this particular artist (I'm going to limit my attempts at spelling her name because of how complicated it is) because I really the timbre of her voice. It's got such clarity and sits at the right register in terms of depth, and bass. It's not too breathy, and oozes conviction. I'm also a fan of her choice of instrumentation. It convinces me of her careful and meaningful approach to composition This one maintains a pretty mellow, more relaxed tone throughout. Supported by what I think is a nylon stringed guitar, and a french horn (?) here and there. The beginning riffs remind me of early Simon & Garfunkel songs, especially with that descending bass note and dominant chords. Nevertheless, you never really get any buildups. It's a like a smooth ride on a highway in Kentucky. No bumps, just road. Rating: 6.5/10

Day 125: Fado Portuges by Amalia Rodrigues // 8

GENRE: fado Exposure to a little culture is never a bad thing, which brings me to one of the smallest leads ever that I've followed. Fado is a Portuguese genre of music characterized by melancholic lyrics, folk instruments, and an oppressive loneliness.  I'm not going to take a deep dive into the lyrics, but the romanticism inherent in the language fits so perfectly with the stylistic choices and avenues of the music. I particularly enjoy the gypsy-like tones of the guitars. The singer herself is famous within the genre. All I can really say is that her voice has an incredible depth and warmth to it. The fact that the material is so poignant yet beautiful is jarring in a way that's tasteful and pleasant. It makes me wonder if I'd be able to learn some of these songs myself, because they definitely evoke a sense of companionship and comfort.  Rating: 8/10
