Day 158: Sabotage by The Beastie Boys // 4

In hoping to change my preconception of The Beastie Boys, I decided to listen their best song, apparently.

Opening with an intro that reminds me of Aerosmith's Sweet Emotion, you've got what seems like a pretty fat and catchy beat, perfectly fitting for the time and age. What's always put me off of The Beastie Boys is their vocal style. The energy, I can understand and sympathize. The timbre and tone, I can't. For some reason, the vocal register from which they rap makes me uncomfortable and it just seems so cheesy.  Seeing as how they have such a large fanbase, I'm almost afraid to say that in public. It can't be just me right? Their anger almost seems artificial, and that makes for a lesser than impressive piece of music.

GENRE: pop Oh, I should've checked in more often. Kero Kero Bonito  snuck by and released a whole EP, even when I had caught their single when it first released. On this EP, they continue to innovate their sound, transforming it to be both more mature and more in line with their aesthetic and style. You get techno sounds with emotional synths, quirky samples, laden across like an intricate painting. They've done it again. Rating: 7/10

Day 309: White Gloves by Khruangbin // 5

GENRE: indie I can't quite my finger on why I find this three-piece so alluring. They've got a style to them that evokes a carefree sensibility. That much can be seen in their song, White Gloves . Apparently it's part their first album to feature vocals, and it's a welcome addition to the canvas. No one instrument stands out any farther and more unique than the others. Each instrument is featured and mixed pretty evenly, giving me a sense of noiselessness and soothing comfort. However, I think part of that plays against their favor. It plays more like a lo-fi ditty than a fully realized song. At about 3 and a half minutes, I would expect a bit more to be fleshed out. Rating: 5/10

Day 54: Retreat to Hibernate by Heretoir // 4

genre: metal snack: hershey's cookies and cream  This song suggestion was derived from Spotify's algorithms, from which the input songs were the slew of daily posts on this blog. Evidently, I've been a little too focused on the metal side of things, but it's not like I ever made a restriction in the first place. Either way, this seems like your run-of-the-mill black metal song, in song structure and instrumentation. I may be experiencing fatigue, but I'm pretty much over this genre of music. I need a little bit more life in my music, more variation, more development of themes without extending the song longer than it needs to be. Unless it expands beyond the norms of the genre, I sleep. It's also possible I'm just spoiled by what could be the best bands of the genre, and I don't have a proper understanding of what the genre truly is.
