Day 133: Old Town Road by Lil Nas X (feat. Billy Ray Cyrus) // 8.5

Well, I guess it was inevitable. When you first think of it as a fusion of rap and country, you probably wouldn't expect it to be one of the hottest hits of the year. More than that, Lil Nas has been riding this train and getting a lot of mileage out of it, quickly booming onto the mainstream.

Regarding the quality of the song itself, there's no denying that it is catchy and gets stuck in your head so easily. One hypothesis I have is that the general lower register of the song is something that's ostensibly more uncommon in today's pop music. It's like finding a new favorite snack. Plus, the topic itself is unfamiliar territory, almost stereotypical, from most people's points of view. I think it all blends together to be both a funny and pleasurable hit piece. With the uncanny inclusion of Billy Ray, there's no doubt that you'd get an interesting song given that no one knows what he's been up to for the past decade.

GENRE: electronic I regarded FKA Twigs  as a more experimental electronic, modern artist. Today's song feels quite grounded in conventional techniques. Nothing stands out to me as groundbreaking or pushing the boundaries of the genre. I did not expect someone else to be featured on this album either. Day 309: White Gloves by Khruangbin // 5

GENRE: indie I can't quite my finger on why I find this three-piece so alluring. They've got a style to them that evokes a carefree sensibility. That much can be seen in their song, White Gloves . Apparently it's part their first album to feature vocals, and it's a welcome addition to the canvas. No one instrument stands out any farther and more unique than the others. Each instrument is featured and mixed pretty evenly, giving me a sense of noiselessness and soothing comfort. However, I think part of that plays against their favor. It plays more like a lo-fi ditty than a fully realized song. At about 3 and a half minutes, I would expect a bit more to be fleshed out. Rating: 5/10
