Day 214: Lover Is a Day by Cuco // 5.5

Wow, this song is composed in a style that I myself want to emulate. The production is really nice and addictive. It totally absorbs you in the atmosphere that's given off by the album cover. My first nitpick though is his singing style. It just falls a bit flat for me. It feels like very static in its tone and dynamics, like just going through a routine, especially during the long verses around the 3:50 mark. It's just constant singing. I've always subscribed to the idea that the silences in between matter just as much.

I'm glad the song is longer than usual. You're going to want this kind of length when writing a song that slowly burns and envelopes you. Unfortunately, the song itself doesn't develop throughout accordingly. Yet, that's not a bad thing considering the contemplative, calming nature of the song.

On this EP, they continue to innovate their sound, transforming it to be both more mature and more in line with their aesthetic and style. GENRE: indie I can't quite my finger on why I find this three-piece so alluring. They've got a style to them that evokes a carefree sensibility. That much can be seen in their song, White Gloves . Apparently it's part their first album to feature vocals, and it's a welcome addition to the canvas. No one instrument stands out any farther and more unique than the others. Each instrument is featured and mixed pretty evenly, giving me a sense of noiselessness and soothing comfort. However, I think part of that plays against their favor. It plays more like a lo-fi ditty than a fully realized song. At about 3 and a half minutes, I would expect a bit more to be fleshed out. Rating: 5/10

Day 54: Retreat to Hibernate by Heretoir // 4

genre: metal snack: hershey's cookies and cream  This song suggestion was derived from Spotify's algorithms, from which the input songs were the slew of daily posts on this blog. Evidently, I've been a little too focused on the metal side of things, but it's not like I ever made a restriction in the first place. Either way, this seems like your run-of-the-mill black metal song, in song structure and instrumentation. I may be experiencing fatigue, but I'm pretty much over this genre of music. I need a little bit more life in my music, more variation, more development of themes without extending the song longer than it needs to be. Unless it expands beyond the norms of the genre, I sleep. It's also possible I'm just spoiled by what could be the best bands of the genre, and I don't have a proper understanding of what the genre truly is.
