Day 80: Shotgun by George Ezra // 4

It was difficult to find a song I wanted to write about, and so this is what I ended up with. Now, I thought I liked folk music, but I guess I only like a particular subset of folk, because this ain't it. Now, I don't know much about George Ezra, but from what I can gather, his voice is incredibly unique. He definitely puts it to good use.

As for the song itself, it plays by the books. I don't know how to describe it, but it's got those typical empowered chords, and you've got those cliche horns in the background. The drums aren't anything new. It says something when my favorite part of the song is the articulate guitar chord in the beginning. In short, the song itself is uninspired, and just isn't for me.

GENRE: indie We have another one of those artists where super short bangs are the style of choice. I wonder if that has any correlation to the genre. She's got like a modern  Janis Joplin vibe. She's got a hardcore punk-ish aesthetic going on, except she's doing indie music. Shut Up Kiss Me  is a little more distorted and driven than the usual cleaner sounds associated with the genre. Although it has the inklings of a typical rock song, the extra tidbits that extend beyond a typical intro, verse, chorus, repeat structure is I believe to be the determinant of its indie status. I do enjoy the weird effects thrown onto all the guitars. I particularly like the energy of the chorus. It's one of my favorite rhythms to incorporate. They're certainly doing it justice in this one. Rating: 6.5/10

Day 160: Tinder by Origamibiro // 8

GENRE: experimental, atmospheric  I'm not always too excited to be venturing out into music that gives an impression of being old but not a classic. I ventured into my recommended and came upon what felt like a haunting and lonesome experience. A lack of words, a lack of structure, and really a lack of theme that I've found makes for a sobering reflection. I imagine as if the artist was presenting to us a mirror by way of this song. I could see some substance to that argument going off of the creepy album cover. It begs for a deeper dive into who the artist is, especially when they haven't put out anything since 2014. Either way, this piece really does fit itself into a bigger picture. The album, based on the little I've looked into it, seems to be hitting the same vein when it comes to mood and atmosphere, and what the artist is trying to evoke from you. I dig. Rating: 8/10

Day 171: Windows by Frankie Cosmos // 6

GENRE: indie rock Another one of those names that have always flown around in passing. Either that, or because this band is just in the vicinity of the songs that I enjoy listening to. From a glance, I can verify that the recommendations were accurate. Female vocalist, soft-ish instrumentation, but a killer fun drum part. You don't often see that aggression in these types of songs. Overall a very timid, subdued song. I know from experience that Frankie Cosmos  writes and performs a variety of intensities; this just so happens to be on the tamer end. Really, just a short and sweet piece. Although nothing special, it's not boring, and could be a fun listen hitherto. Rating: 6/10
