Day 302: Don't Start Now by Dua Lipa // 6

Coming in I had few expectations. Post-listening, I will say that I'm quite surprised. What usually deters me from listening to top-of-the-charts hits is their mundane and homogeneous production.  I may not have been caught up with the current industry, but I can definitely jam with that bumping bass line. Going staccato and funky was the right choice to go, and feels like Daft Punk in that regard. I also appreciate the diversity of sounds thrown in throughout the song. I'll have to do more research, because this could be Dua Lipa coming into her own style. I hope she continues to grow from this. The only downside I would attach to this is the monotony of her voice. Her timbre and her cadence is just too similar to some generic song you'd find in a club.

GENRE: progressive  Ok, I had my doubts when I first started listening to this song. It seemed a bit cheesy at first? However, it's definitely grown on me. There's a gradual progression throughout the piece, with various sections incorporating a range of momentum and tempos and time signatures, especially the section about 3 minutes in. This song has quite a bit going for it. The 7/8 is a nice feature as well. I love drumming to this piece because of that. The drummer plays out of their mind to begin with. The composition has a solid theme going throughout the piece that serves as the glue to the song. That chromatic interval appears quite a bit throughout the song. Again, that's grown on me. Rating: 8/10

Day 11: She Watch Channel Zero by Follow For Now // 7.5

genre: rock, funk metal snack: Kroger Mesquite BBQ Chips For the next few days my posts will be limited in scope due to my busy schedule. Damn, this is a banger. Not only does it have one of my favorite musical patterns in the syncopated rhythm of "She watch, she watch, she watch...". It might sound obvious, but it's like a gentler Rage Against The Machine. Don't forget, RATM is one of my favorite bands. The raw energy, the deliciously catchy riffs, and how they build up their songs. It's really no different in this song. It's got all the things you'd want. However, it only makes me want to listen to more RATM, because this song seems to lack the kind of visceral sound. Rating: 7.5/10

Day 216: Don't Think Twice, It's All Right by Bob Dylan // 7.5

GENRE: folk I had a vivid dream that I was a cowboy in the rustic ghost town, while a Bob Dylan song was playing in the background. This is my salutation to that fun dream. Bob Dylan himself has been in the music industry for such a long time, and few people have listened to that gigantic discography in its entirety. I know his more famous works, but even then there are some that just slip by. You can immediately tell it's a Bob Dylan song, what with it's particular acoustic guitar plucking style, the voice obviously, and the harmonica. I guess, when you listen to this song, you aren't there for instrumental technique. You're there for the comforting, folk timbre and the compassionate lyrics. Granted, it's a push and pull love song, it's still a Bob Dylan song at its core. Rating: 7.5/10
