I've listened to a bit of Billie Eilish before, but it's been hit or miss for me. Some of her songs are incredibly interesting, but this one seems to be the latter for me. I admire her vice, and how she uses it in the song, but it doesn't ever change much from the hushed, sinister voice that appears across her songs. Don't get me wrong. I love her aesthetic, but it's dried out a little too quick for me. I don't even have that much to say about this song, because it doesn't develop much at all. It's just kinda there...

GENRE: jazz This was as organic as a song recommendation as can be. Being a party, you can just ask the DJ who the artist is. Easy as that! And I'm excited to listen and understand that she is exceptionally good at what she does. Fundamentally, it's jazz, but there's such a nice layer of R&B and experimental music on top that gives her such a unique sound. On top of that, you get a sort of formless music with oddly timed phrases and broken verses. It's much like the type of writing you'd expect from Meshuggah. Even though the drums denote that the beat is quite straight, the roots and "downbeats" kind of shift here and there. It's quite spectacular to listen to. Seriously, her music is such a mindbender to listen to. Thankfully, you can both chill to it, and improvise to it too if you're really ambitious. Rating: 8/10

Day 125: Fado Portuges by Amalia Rodrigues // 8

GENRE: fado Exposure to a little culture is never a bad thing, which brings me to one of the smallest leads ever that I've followed. Fado is a Portuguese genre of music characterized by melancholic lyrics, folk instruments, and an oppressive loneliness.  I'm not going to take a deep dive into the lyrics, but the romanticism inherent in the language fits so perfectly with the stylistic choices and avenues of the music. I particularly enjoy the gypsy-like tones of the guitars. The singer herself is famous within the genre. All I can really say is that her voice has an incredible depth and warmth to it. The fact that the material is so poignant yet beautiful is jarring in a way that's tasteful and pleasant. It makes me wonder if I'd be able to learn some of these songs myself, because they definitely evoke a sense of companionship and comfort.  Rating: 8/10

Day 95: Boy With Luv (feat. Halsey) by BTS // 8

GENRE: kpop water Heard it on a radio, where my Uber drive was catering to the youth. So why not? I've listened to some BTS by osmosis. My sister is a fanatic, probably the biggest one I know. This song features Halsey, but honestly I don't think I've ever listened to Halsey, so I'm not even entirely sure where she is featured. Either way, as with most kpop, you get catchy melodies present in the accompanying instruments. With modern pop, you get a very common rhythmic theme. The double consecutive sixteenth note hits have shown up everywhere. Just look up Adam Neely's video on it (no link provided). And for that, it makes me think that their music is as manufactured as ever. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Their music is catchy and a good listen, but it's more their personality that sells. It's perhaps this common structure of BTS's music that has desensitized me to this style of music. For better or worse, it will still grab a hold on young...
